2021 starting quarterback and team captain Gunnar Holmberg took some time to talk about what brought him to Durham, the benefits of a Duke education and his time as a Blue Devil.

Don’t leave, Gunnar!

Gunnar is a great quarterback with a bright future. He hope you enjoy this interview with the second Holmberg to come on the podcast.

Interview – Joey Finison

Former Duke offensive lineman Joey Finison took some time out of a Saturday to come on the podcast and give an in-depth talk on his time as a Blue Devil, the state of the program today and David Cutcliffe’s legacy in Durham.

New Faces - Joey Finison Q&A - Duke University

This was a great talk about the state of college football overall and, in particular, the Duke program. We learn a lot about the coaching staff and get a real in-depth look at the Blue Devils. Coach Latina told me that the OL gives the best interviews and this one won’t disappoint.

Interview – Randy Cuthbert (The GOAT)

Dr. Randy Cuthbert is the greatest Duke running back in my lifetime. He was part of the magical 1989 season that ended in a ACC Championship (shared with Virginia) and played in the NFL with the Steelers. Dr. Cuthbert took some time out of a Saturday to talk about his career in education, his time as a football coach, how to approach concussions in football and, of course, Duke football.

Now as you listen to the podcast, you’ll probably wonder why it took so long to get to one of the greatest moments in Duke football history which is pictured below

41-0. Scoreboard!

I have to apologize for that oversight. We spent a lot of time talking about the win against Clemson and how it started the Blue Devils on a run to the title and I guess I got distracted. But I appreciate Dr. Cuthbert getting back on the call to finish up the interview. He shares a great story or two about that great win.

We also discuss one of the greatest touchdowns in Duke history which came in the 1989 game against Clemson. I’ve skipped it ahead to about 1 hour and 30 minutes in so you can see Cuthbert cap the drive that got the Blue Devils back into the game and started them on their path to the ACC crown

Go Duke!

Interview – ACC Coaching Carousel

Matthew from All Sports Discussion and The ACC Weekly Podcast took some time tonight to come on the podcast and give his thoughts on what coaching changes we’re likely to see in the ACC next season. We had a great time, dropped a Metro Conference reference and, after talking a lot of football, got into Duke and VT basketball. Oh, and I previewed some guests for Season Two. Thanks, Matt, for coming on!

We hope you enjoy the episode.

Interview – Bonus Episode with Robert Brickey

If you’re my age or older, you know who Robert Brickey is.

Robert Brickey in action.

If you’re a youngster, you missed out. Robert Brickey was a great player at Duke who was a lot of fun to watch.

See? I told you he was fun to watch.

Turns out that Robert Brickey isn’t just a former Blue Devil basketball player, he’s also a Duke football fan. Robert was kind enough to take some time out of a Thursday evening to talk about basketball, the legacy of his jersey number, number 21, finances, life and football. This was a fun talk with a great Blue Devil. I know you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Bonus Episode – Duke Northwestern Jam Session

We don’t have an interview, but the Coordinators have a jam session! After a year not being able to watch games together because of COVID-19, we got together to drink beer and watch Duke beat Northwestern!

Extra point: Duke football holds on against Northwestern for stunning win - The Chronicle
Mataeo is a man on a mission.

Consistent with our pre-COVID routine, we played old time music during commercials and halftime and decided to record some songs for the first time in a long while. The track listing is below. Consistent with our tradition, we renamed the songs based on good moments in the game!

Track one – Last Steam Engine Train or Holding on by the skin of our teeth

Track two – Big Scioty or Gunnar to Durant

Track three – Walking Up Georgia Row – A whole lotta interceptions

Track four – Fanny Poer or Touchdown Duke

Tim played lead (mandolin and guitar) and I played rhythm guitar. If you guys like this, we’ll keep doing them throughout the year.

Can’t wait to see you all at Wallace Wade on Saturday! Go Duke!

Interview – Bonus Episode with Ryan Wolitzer

Ryan Wolitzer of The Wolitzer Group stopped by last week to talk about NIL and his work advising athletes through the NIL process.

Ryan played football at Duke from 2016 to 2019. Since graduating, he’s landed in the field of NIL advising athletes through the process and helping them operate in this new environment. He’s got some pretty impressive clients and a bright future ahead of him.

We also discuss my ongoing desire to have our show sponsored by Karhu. That company makes the absolute best shoes you will ever find. Seriously, Karhu, let’s talk!

Interview – Koby Quansah

We close out Season One with a BANG!

Koby Quansah - 2019 - Football - Duke University
You know Koby just made a big play here.

Former Duke captain Koby Quansah stopped by to talk about his time as a Blue Devil, the “What if” seasons that are 2016 and 2018, two great bowl wins and how COVID-19 has affected the draft and and free agency process. I had a lot of fun talking to Koby and getting to know more about a guy who always made an impact on the field. This was a great discussion with a Duke legend. I know you’ll like it.

We also talked about the Jump Pass. You’ve been warned.

We also give a shout-out to Ryan Wolitzer of the Wolitzer Group who runs a consulting group for NIL issues. Best of luck on a great career, Ryan!

Thanks to all you guys for listening. We couldn’t do this without an audience.

Interview – Mike Ramsay

Former captain and defensive lineman Mike Ramsay took some time from his Saturday morning to talk to us about his current life, his college and pro football career and the start of his fiancé’s legal career. One fun fact – he played for the Orlando Apollos and Coach Spurrier!

Mike helps lift the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl Championship trophy.

Mike played at Duke from 2013-2017 and experienced a lot of great moments in Blue Devils football history. We covered those along with the injury-riddled 2016 season and the up-and-down 2017 season. And before you ask, yes, we talked about Miami. You’ve been warned.

Beyond the football talk, we had an interesting discussion about financial literacy, the social issues that are tied into our education system and we get into one of the most informative history podcasts ever, the Revolutions Podcast series on The Haitian Revolution. If you’re not interested in this discussion, just skip over 8:53-17:12. I enjoyed our talk, but understand that some of you may be here for just the football. If you don’t want to listen, that’s fine – skip past it. Don’t blow me up with negative emails, Twitter mentions and the like.

Going back to Haiti’s revolution, the first episode can be found here. I can’t recommend this series, and the entire Revolutions Podcast, enough. Mike Duncan is a great podcaster – start listening to him if you haven’t already.
